Athlete Testimonial

Early September 2017. It is 24 days before I turn 32 years. I have just completed my second half ironman event with a Personal Best of 5hrs 38mins at IRONMAN 70.3 Cascais, Portugal. Three months prior I struggled over the line of my first 70.3 on the Isle of Arran, Scotland in a time of 6hours 34mins.

In the space of three months, I was able to eradicate significant time off my bike and half marathon run disciplines by following the advice and training program set by triathlon coach Phil Jarvis.

My name is Ray Jellema, and I work in the oil industry as an engineer based in Angola, in Africa.

In the past, I had dabbled with a few small scale triathlons in my spare time but never really allowed myself to follow a dedicated training plan. In general, I consider myself reasonably fit but as endurance events go I would class myself as 'average at best'. Once in 2011, I completed a full ironman with limited self guided training, but suffered most of the way through .. especially the run discipline.

i decided to take triathlon up more seriously and bring a level of competitiveness into my participation, rather than just ... you know ... participating. To do this I decided it was mandatory to seek some professional advise. I mean who wants to be left behind when it comes to competitive sports .

I teamed up with Phil Jarvis @ Aerobicmonster.co.uk (via IRONMAN COACH MATCH)

After an initial chat via Skype together, Phil set up my profile in an app called Training Peaks where we manage all our training schedules, feedback and upload all training data.

For the athlete, using Training Peaks App is a pretty painless process and very simple to use on a daily basis. Phil uploads a training schedule on a weekly basis ... I adjust the timings around my life ... then do it!

The variety of workouts are vast and I do not find myself getting bored of any repetitive routines

I am very happy with the fitness progress I have made so far following Phil's coaching. The weekly workout programs are easily incorporated into my lifestyle, with flexibility to manage around my work & social calendar. Comparing to making my own training schedule I am much more efficient, which frees me up for more social and family time.

I feel my PB in Cascais 70.3 is just the tip of the iceberg and look forward to further improvements in the future as we work together towards more events in faster better times.

Cheers Phil! Good Job! Ray Jellema
